Early Morning Sun, Morgan and Chickens

One of the things I love best about the forest is being out in it in the early morning and watching the sunlight make its way through the tree tops to light up patches of the forest floor.

After all the rain and snow the leaf layer on the ground is still wet and the moisture has made the moss very happy.

The chickens are digging up the layers of wet leaves to get down to dirt that they can scratch through to find some tasty grub.

I've noticed that the hens especially like to scratch around the base of the trees. There must be some really good thing to find.

Two more mostly sunny days and then we are back to rain and thunder storms. I am being very lazy and not doing much of anything and I blame it on the weather. I've got lots to do and I want sun and warm days.

Close Call

It was a close thing this morning. I almost got together enough energy and will power to go out and haul some wheel barrows of dirt around and clean the chicken coop.

But just in the nick of time I decided to do laundry and wash my work clothes. No excuse tomorrow. I'll have to get out there and do some work.

Bye, bye books. I still have two more Elizabeth Peters, Amelia Peabody mysteries to finish. I go for the escapist type take me away reading.

I think this whole no energy thing has something to do with the seasons changing. Maybe my body is trying to go into a hibernation mode for the Winter? I'm sleepy and so is Kristine.

The chickens had a scare today and ran to hide under bushes, the jays were screeching and Morgan was running around looking for something. Not barking though. Kristine and I couldn't figure out what the problem was... hawk, fox, coyote?

After the chickens surfaced, I cut them up some cabbage and had a photo op. (Kristine got hamburgers and fries for us and cabbage for the chickens.) They look terrible. The chicken pen and coop are full of feathers just like last year.

The big green bag on the porch is covering the plastic christmas tree. I hauled it out of storage when I was clearing stuff out and left it there. I'm undecided... somedays I think I would like to have a real tree this Christmas and some days I think, no, I don't want to deal with the needle mess, watering, and worry about fire danger.

News is that someone around the area had their goats and all their chickens stolen. Makes you wonder why they were taken. Food? Mischief? Fowl play? (yeah, I know, bad pun... it's foul)

Global Warming?
I say Ha! too.
Supposedly, chickens don't fart so I guess I don't have to worry about some global warming edict coming out about how I need to get rid of my chickens to save the world. I feel sorry for the people who have cows. They are getting a bum rap.

Molting last year.

Rain Check Please

Rain... first thing I did this morning was (here's a switch, I got up early when Kristine did) go out and put the chicken feed inside the coop out of the rain.

I tossed lots of scratch out in the pen to give the chickens something to keep them busy. The hens have to stay locked up today (and are not happy about it) so I can keep Morgan inside the house instead of leave her outside watching the chickens and getting all wet and smelly. Not good.

As I hurried back to the porch to move boxes, lumber, and stuff inside, I tried to get a photo of the dark sky threatening rain and the chicken flag flapping in the wind, but as soon as I went to take the picture the wind stopped. Wind moving the flag is a big deal. I can see the wind blowing the tops of the trees around, but the wind seldom makes it down to flag level unless there is a storm on the way.

I'm calling in a rain check due to the weather changing from over 100 two days ago to drizzle today and (real rain forecast tomorrow) messing up my plans for sorting and getting rid of stuff. By this, I mean I want more summer days so I can finish up painting and my outside work.

I scurried around hauling boxes and things off the porch back inside the old spa house and the "in between" area.

Sigh... my nice painted room (the "in between") is all messed up again. Well, if I can believe the forecast we are supposed to be back in 80+ degree weather starting Monday.

Gee... then I get to haul all the stuff back outside. Whoopee...
Argh! I covered some of this stuff up with plastic in case the skylight leaks. I guess I could look on this rain as a test for getting ready for winter rain and snow. Leaks? I hope not.

I was exhausted after rushing around and picking up heavy things and carrying them. I tried resting on the couch and reading, but it was cold and we haven't fired up the wood stove yet, so I put on my winter knitted cap and went back to bed... somewhere in there I made tea and read. Hard to believe Summer is almost over... (Autumn is September, October and November.)

I hope September gives us some nice warm dog days.
I'm going back to bed.
Brrr...

Hungry Chickens

Chickens in a hurry!

This is what I see when I go outside. The chickens see me and make a dash to where ever I am and then follow me around.

They act like I never feed them. Poor starving chickens.

This is what they love...
Scratching up scratch that I toss on the ground. I throw the corn out in handfuls into four different spots so the bossy hens don't eat it all.

I still haven't got out to the coop and changed the straw. I'm bad. I covered up the old straw with new straw and promised the chickens I would be back to work in the coop as soon as I get done painting in the house.

There is a definite feeling of Fall in the air. It is supposed to heat back up in a few days, but I think we are going to have an early Autumn and Winter this year. Kristine said that the birds that migrate have already left. I want to get the painting finished while I can still leave the windows open at night.

I painted away the orange and now the wall is a lovely apricot color. I'm going to paint the entry tomorrow and would like to paint the insides of the upper kitchen cupboards too. Maybe I'll have enough time if I get started early.

The other reason I decide to go with orange when I picked up the paint last year is because the kitchen area in the den area is orange formica. And instead of painting it or getting a new counter over there I thought I would just go with the color.

There is a small area over the slider in the entry that I will keep orange. I'll paint the other three walls apricot. I'm having fun painting. I'm slow because I'm painting with a brush. There are so many windows and doors that trying to paint with a roller would be a waste of time and paint. I'd have to clean the roller and there would be a lot of paint lost in the roller.

The shelf is painted again and I'm letting it dry overnight before I try and hang it tomorrow.

Finished Painting The "In Between"

It's mid afternoon. I can tell by looking at these chickens in what I call "the huddle." The hens have their daily routine and don't vary from it very often. The rest of the hens are close, but these hens fit in the photo.
Later, when it is almost dark just before the hens go in the coop to roost for the night most of the chickens will gather near the coop door.

But the huddle is a time to fluff and straighten feathers and make themselves beautiful. I guess it's like a bunch of girls heading off to the powder room together.

I mixed up the paint (3 gallons) and finished painting the room. I even had a half gallon left over. I love this paint because it is so easy to wash the brush and roller with water, covers in one coat, and the container has a side handle and screw on lids.

There are some places that are just not meant to be cleaned. The back of the water heater, behind the washer and dryer, and behind this vacuum canister thing. I decided not to try and paint behind it either. I'll try and get the cobwebs, but that's it for cleaning.

I'm really supposed to be finishing up working in the kitchen. I still have the top cupboard to paint. But, I wanted a place to put all my tools, so I painted this room so I could move my little work table in here and fill it up with my stuff.

The middle of this room is finished. It still needs some kind of flooring and the top of the room needs something. It is very high and I'm a bit afraid to climb up there and try and paint. So, for now the cobwebs I can't reach will have to stay. I would like to have scaffolding.

I love the light from skylight!  This room is an enclosed walkway... not really a room. We call it "the in between."But, I like it painted much better than the way it was before.

Next project is to go back to working in the kitchen. Tom picked up some magnetic catches for the cupboard doors. I can put those on tomorrow. That will be enough... I'm tired. I'll take the day off.

I've come up with some new ideas for finishing the top cupboards. Open shelving. I need some more boards. Hope I can find some around here.

Kristine wrote up her experience about when a bear tried to get our chickens (and some other home alone stories) and she chased the bear away. I didn't know there were two dog pans and that she drove around the property. Click here if you want to read her post.

Painting Slowdown

There is something living near the water pan and it has dug a hole that makes a great drain for the water. There would be a big puddle here if the water wasn't running down the hole.

Morgan and the chickens meet up at the watering spot. On the hot mornings I turn on the water and let it run while I collect eggs. The only bad thing about this is that sometimes I forget to turn the water off.

This is the fat wyandotte.
There is a mean wyandotte
and a poorly wyandotte that is doing much better.

And this is the skinny wyandotte that was the first chicken trapped under the fence. She was already a skinny hen. Good thing I guess.

I  made a start on the painting
and found out that I need to cut
some trim boards and trim out around the slider
and some other places before I continue painting.

Tomorrow I'll nail up the trim
and then use a roller
and hopefully cover the walls quickly.

I have been painting with a brush and that is a lot slower. I thought I would paint the grooves and trim before I did the roller painting. I'm tired and got hand cramps from using the brush. Early to bed for me.

Chickens, Paint and Fresh Garden Vegetables

This morning I was in the chicken coop collecting eggs when I heard the little fence fall over. I spun around and there was the fence on the ground with a buff orpington struggling between the slats trying to free herself from the evil fence. Before I could reach the buff she had freed herself and scurried off under the trees.

Who ever locked up the chickens the night before had unhooked the fence (I had put up a hook so it couldn't fall over again) and leaned it against the straw bale. The fence is in front of the door during the day to keep Morgan out of the coop and chicken pen so she doesn't eat the chicken feed. Morgan loves chicken feed. The buff must have gone behind the fence to scratch at the straw and then got caught  and whoosh, bam, almost smashed chicken.

The first time the fence fell it was a wyandotte that almost got flattened. Kristine came to the rescue that time. She said the comb and wattles were turning blue. It's hard to believe that a chicken can push the fence over when they go through the opening between the slats. I guess I am going to have to put up a hook on the outside of the coop to hook the fence on when the door is shut.

I finally decided what I'm going to do about the painting project I'm supposed to be working on instead of finding other things to do like fixing the couch. I'm going to be brave and pour all this paint in a big bucket, mix it up and paint the walls with what ever color results. I hope there will be enough paint. Yes, that is a worry. I suppose the color could be a worry too. I love the screw off tops on these paint containers. I mixed two of the colors together and the color was not too bad. Tomorrow, the painting begins. I hope.

Kristine brought home bags of fresh vegetables picked today from local gardens. She was gifted with this wonderful produce. We enjoyed fresh green beans for dinner and I sliced up the cucumbers and mixed them with wine vinegar, olive oil and a bit of salt.

I hope next year we will have a garden and produce that we can share.

Chickens, Straw And Cobwebs

There is a problem in the chicken coop. There is some egg breakage going on in the nest boxes. Either the thin shelled eggs are breaking on their own or a hen or more have found out they can have eggs for breakfast.

I like collecting eggs for my breakfast, but being greeted with the smell of rotten eggs when I open the coop door really doesn't make my day.

This afternoon Tom brought a bale of straw and leaned it against the coop. In a day or so I will use it to replace the smelly straw in the nest boxes.

I also asked for some DE.  I didn't realize there were so many uses. I always get worried when I read the directions on the package of DE.

Too bad the photo of the chickens is so dark. My fault. I didn't go out until later in the day when it was shady and cooler. The chickens sure like the straw bale. They walk up to the straw, stand back, stick out a foot and scratch away at the bale in hopes of getting something good to eat. Chickens can be so funny.

Kristine made me take the day off because my cough came back, but later in the day when it cooled off a bit she held the ladder for me and I vacuumed down some of the cobwebs. I couldn't reach them all. I'm going to keep the table and my work table in this little room. After I paint, I will have to figure out something to do to the floor. Deck paint?

P.S. Kristine posted about another of her adventures in Phoenix (click here video).

Chicken And Dog Way

The chickens and Morgan decided that the driveway was the place to be! At this time of day things are cooling down a bit so I imagine the shade felt good and there was a bit of a breeze flowing past. It was hotter up on the porch. Keeping chickens cool... click here.

Kristine said she wanted some quesadillas again tonight. That didn't hurt my feelings. I like them too.

Since my oven is still non-functional I use my iron ware to make the quesadillas.

First I heat up both the flat pancake skillet and the regular skillet on low while I put the quesadillas together.

Then I use the hot pancake skillet for a lid to help melt the cheese.

It doesn't take very long. I slide the quesadilla out of the skillet on to a plate and then flip the tortilla in half.
Yum! I was going to take a photo, but I started eating.

No photos yet, but I have been summer clearing/cleaning. I figure I have at least the month of August to get rid of a whole bunch of stuff. I'll take some photos when it doesn't look so scary. It would be so nice to just bring in a dumpster and fill it up with stuff I don't want.

I love to get rid of stuff I'm not using, but I'm surrounded by people who don't like change. But, I'll just keep plugging away and little by little I'll get rid of stuff. Hopefully, I'll be able to get rid of stuff in bigger batches.

zzzzz... Note: I started drinking a cup of hot chocolate before bed and I am sleeping soundly through the night. Well, I really drink the cocoa while I'm in bed reading. Works for me.

Morgan likes to watch the hens eat their handful of scratch.  I gave the hens a little bit of cabbage earlier in the day.

This Light Brahma likes to get her drinks from the leak in the hose.

The hens like to get together before they go in the coop for the night. There are always a few hens who go in the pen earlier for a bedtime snack.

Train chickens to go in the coop when you want. My chickens go in their coop to roost when it starts getting dark. But sometimes I want them to go in the coop so I can lock them up.

I like to paint.

I got the second coat of paint
on the island
and painted some
of the other cabinets.

I need to put on some painters caulk and then do some touch up paint work.

I still have lots more painting to do: the entry, walls, door, etc.

Good Morgan!

Here is a photo of Morgan at the back fence. Today she has been barking and then tearing off for the fence lines.

I always wonder if she is chasing  squirrels or a fox. When she runs to the fence I think it is perhaps a fox or other predator. I would love to see a California Native Red Fox.

When she runs to a tree, then I think she is herding squirrels from tree to tree. (or following the squirrels) The squirrels are very high up and hop from tree to tree. Morgan (or I) hardly ever see a squirrel on the ground.

While I was back by the fence I noticed a tree that had fallen and was hung up in neighboring tree branches. I don't want to walk under that tree.

On the way back to the house I stopped and watered the little green garden. It is so nice to have a little patch of green among all the dried up litter on the forest floor.

Later, when leaving the garden, I heard some clucking and turned to find I was being followed by the girls. The hens want to find out if I have treats. Sorry, chickies... no treats now.

I gave them cabbage later. I think some of the chickens might have figured out how to fly into the garden, because some of the rose bushes are eaten back.

I spent the day painting. Hard to believe it took me most of the day to get  the first coat of paint on the island.

I didn't have a coat of primer down first, so the paint didn't cover well and the sheet rock sucked the paint up. Tomorrow, the second coat of paint should go on much faster.

Tom's Mom fell and so far the hospital doesn't think she broke or fractured anything. There will be more tests tomorrow.

I'm so sleepy.
I'm having trouble staying awake and alert enough to type this post.

Is It The Heat?

The first thing I heard and saw when I went out to collect eggs today was this hen pacing back and forth. Why didn't she go out the door and join the rest of the chickens? Curious...

Is it the heat that is causing some of the hens to forget where the exit is to the pen. Their poor little brains are fried? Or? The poor things wandered around in the pen clucking away and I was left to wonder "what are they doing?" A puzzle...

In the summer I put out an extra water pan next to the compost stack so Morgan and the chickens will have three water sources handy. Morgan steps right up for a cool drink. The chickens hang back and let Morgan drink in peace.

Then do the chickens drink the nice cold water out of the pan I washed? Ha! No!

The chickens love, love, love to drink the water that pools in the dirt. And they love to stand in the mud and scratch. I can understand how the cold muddy water between your toes would feel great on a hot day.

(When I was six, I used to enjoy stomping around barefoot when the orchard was irrigated. It was shady and cool among the trees with the soft silky mud up over my knees. The feel of cool muddy legs and mud squishing between my toes on a hot, hot day was delightful. I should ask the chickens to move over and give me some room.)

But drinking muddy water? What's the deal with that?

Here is a page about how to build a homemade chicken waterer. We have an automatic waterer so I don't have to haul water, but this would be a great backup waterer. I would like to make one.

This is a find Morgan photo. I love how the chickens and Morgan can disappear in plain sight.

Morgan is in the middle of the photo in front of the bottom of the two trees in the back. Sneaky, huh? I wonder if the fox or the skunks watch her.

I haven't seen any bears this year and wondered if they had moved to an area that was less crowded. I expect to have some of the chickens over the years become chicken dinner for predators. I don't like it. I don't want my flock killed off, but one or two a year is to be expected. Morgan can't watch all the chickens all the time.

Ah! I just read about an international poaching ring that was captured in the area. They found a bear baiting setup that also had taken mountain lions and other wildlife. If they found one ring then there must be other poachers out there taking deer, turkey and other animals. I wish they could catch them all. People can call caltip to turn in poachers. You don't have to leave your name.

I haven't heard any mountain lions in a long time.

Green On Top

Lots of leaves! There are always leaves all year. They are on the trees in the Spring, Summer and Autumn and always on the forest floor.

The oak trees are all leafed out now, so when I look up the forest looks green and bright against the blue, blue sky. The the leaves up there do block a lot of the sun and keep it cooler down here.

The camera didn't capture the deep blue of the sky. Up here there isn't any smog although there were clouds today because there are thunder storms south of Lake Tahoe. We could use a sprinkle or two, but I don't want any lightening starting forest fires.

The thunderstorms can stay away, thank you.

There is a stack of winter fire wood drying out in the sun under the trees. Maybe we won't stack it in the shed this year and just cover it when the rains start. Some year we do that. We use it up first.

Next are some photos of what I see when I look around. Not a whole lot of green. The green is up. It is brown tree trunks and dried out leaves down here. No grass. Only a few green bushes and my green garden near the house.

The good thing about all the leaves is that they provide camouflage for the chickens and even Morgan is hard to spot sometimes. She will look like just another sun spot until she moves.

I hope it gives the fox fits trying to spot the chickens!

There is a white Brahma in the woods. She doesn't stand out as much as I thought she would.

There is a dark chicken in the photo with Morgan. In fact I think the dark chicken is easier to see than the white one.

I couldn't take the eggy background. Those eggs were just too big and, well... eggy. So I switched again. I did find some fuzzy little yellow chicks, but they were too cutsie. Then I found some chicken wire, but that was too plain.

Then I found these leaves that kinda match up with the leaves on the porch. I'll try this background out for a while. I was hoping to find a background with mountains and mountain type trees. There is one, but it has a stream. I guess I could pretend I have a river on the property. There are rivers, but they are at the bottom of the mountain. I'll keep playing with the design tool.

Pineapple Sweet and Sour Chicken for dinner. Not our chickens. I think they would be too tough and stringy to eat what with them tromping through the woods all day.

Kristine comes home tomorrow. She will need the weekend to rest up from the trip. I've kept her fish alive in spite of wanting to feed them more than she said. (I didn't) The plants are watered and still perky.
Morgan is ok but wants her Mom back.

Broody Chickens

These hens are not broody.

The broody hens are in the pen. I took the broody hens out of their nest boxes and shut them in the chicken pen where they have feed and water but no access to nest boxes. They are not happy but at least they are eating and drinking and walking around.

The rest of the hens can get to the nest boxes to lay eggs but can't get to the automatic waterer. So, I filled a pan of water for the outside chickens. I had to sprinkle some scratch near the water pan before the chickens would would come check the pan out. They like the water in the pan ok but they really like the water that flowed out and made puddles in the dirt when I was filling the pan. They love that muddy water. Go figure.

I spent some time wandering around finding more branches and bringing them back to the planter beds. I'm going to fill the dug out beds with wood then fill it with water and let the wood soak before I put on a layer of dirt.

Next step is to get the branch cutters and make smaller branches out of big ones and arrange all this wood neatly. I think I will try walking around on the branches first and see if some of them will just break into smaller pieces.

iPhoto is giving me a headache! It is just short of crashing running very, very slow. I was going through old photos and throwing them in the trash and evidently I threw too much away and iPhoto lost its mind. I did a search (wish I had done that before I deleted photos) and found out that you are not supposed to trash more than 100 photos at a time. Arrgh!

I was able to find the photos I took today but the photo of the chickens only showed up in the large size so you can click on it and it will enlarge. Screamer and Pastey are the Light Brahmas drinking with one of the no name Dark Brahmas.

Kristine will be calling soon, Morgan is due back from the groomers, and I have to quit typing this and go cook dinner.

iPhoto update: I finally got iPhoto working again, but I had to trash the last two days photos. Live and learn.

Sunny But Cold

The chickens are eating scratch I tossed on the ground and Morgan is thinking about how she can lick some of the corn up without me seeing her being sneaky. I really don't want to be up all night with a sick doggie. So, I stand and watch while the chickens eat up all the scratch.

There is a pile of small branches behind Morgan. I'm collecting them to use as a layer in the hugelkultur planter beds. I still need to find some more small branches and some larger pieces for the first layer. I wish I knew someone who had cows because I would love to have some manure to add to the soil. I really don't want to buy bags of compost from the nursery. Who knows what is in the stuff or where it comes from.

I guess I will dig up some of the "soil" from the chicken pen and add it to the dirt in the planter beds. I have read that chicken poo will burn plant roots, so I will add the chicken soil as a layer over the bottom layer of logs. Maybe I can take off the top few inches of soil in the chicken pen and put that on the logs and then use the soil that is deeper and has been there longer to add to the dirt I will use for top soil in the planter beds. I'll see what happens when I ever get out there to do some work.

I found another site (OregonLive) with info about hugelkultur with a link to a diagram on how to assemble the layers. It seems that people put the beds together pretty much the way they want according to what they have on hand or can get. I was getting worried about what layers go where, but I have decided to calm down and just do the best I can with what I have available.

Branches and Beds

This is a photo of two planter beds that I have started to fill with old branches. I dug out the smaller bed today and then wandered around the property looking for branches hiding under the leaves. I am about halfway done filling the beds with the wood. Looking for more wood will be a good job for me tomorrow.

It was so nice and warm today, but the weather is going back to the 60's and 50's for the rest of the week. I will be happy when we get some warm weather. I need sunshine!

Morgan did a lot of barking today that I would like to think was at foxes, but I think she was probably after squirrels. At least the barking will hopefully keep the fox away.

Things are pretty boring around here. The big event today was when a propane truck parked out by the gate with the engine running. Noisy thing! I was out checking on the chickens and taking photos so I clicked off a pic. I thought the truck drivers might be lost... or maybe they stopped to eat lunch?

The chickens are so happy to be back out in the woods. The ground is still fairly wet so the hens are having a ball digging holes looking for yummy eats.

I have started reading comments and blogs. It is going to take me a long time to catch up.

Kristine and I are still tired and sleepy. I'm going to cook steak tonight in hopes that will give us some energy. Maybe I should get some salmon. Fish and chips sounds good.

Chickens, Garden and Happy St. Patrick's Day

I didn't work on making planter boxes today because I had to figure out where they would fit in the area in front of the greenhouse.

I used scrap wood to lay out the planter box areas. I raked most of the leaves onto the places that will be the walkways.

The two green bushes are a Rosemary and a Thyme.

There were times today when the sun came out and the hens wanted to sun bathe.

Morgan noticed the chickens laying in the sun and must have thought it was a good idea because she laid down behind them.

Then I noticed Morgan noticing something...

Oh, another chicken.

Another sun bather?

Oh... it's Screamer.

What is she up to?

She is such a spoil sport!

No, No, don't run over them.

What a bad girl.

Screamer is a pill.

Oh, well, the Australorp and the Wyandotte are running off with Screamer.

But, the Buff Orpington knows how to relax.

She's not going to let Screamer ruin her time in the sun.
Morgan is not going to let Screamer boss her around either.

I got my time in the sun taking photos and trying to put a garden together. I tried to grow veggies in this area once but they didn't do well at all. This year I hope that using the planter boxes and better soil will mean that we will have a garden full of good things.

After I get everything ready to plant I will need seeds or starter plants. I will start looking around for seeds.

Sprout update: Some of the lentils are splitting, but I don't see any little roots. I'll keep waiting.
