Raking Thursday

I spent a few hours outside raking a path and picking up down tree limbs. I got half of the driveway done and a start on the paths. It was wonderful being outside breathing the warm fresh forest air.

I hauled branches around and stacked them along the driveway where they will be easy to haul away. Some of the limbs are too heavy for me to move... maybe in the summer when they dry out they will be light enough for me to drag.

It is going to take a long time for me to pick up all the down branches. I only got a small patch cleared today.

It's been about five months since I've done any heavy outside work and I'm trying to break myself in easy without causing myself an injury. I'm too old to push myself. I'll do a little bit more every day.

Today when I started sweating and getting a little tired... I quit... came inside and got my camera and took these photos.

Hard to believe there's only about four months until Fall shows up and we start the Winter weather again. Hope this sunny weather holds so I can get all my projects finished.

I'll work on clearing the paths, driveway and picking up the debris for now. Then there is the garage roof to clear and I need to work on the chicken coop.

And there is the garden. Hmmm... don't know if there is much time for anything to grow. I'll have to talk to Kristine and see about a trip to the nursery for some plants. I think I would have better luck with seedlings than planting seeds.

Morgan  had to stay in my little green garden and couldn't run around with the chickens.

The chickens are running around loose. They are living dangerously without her protection. So far so good.

Blogger is still acting up a bit... in order to get comments to post I have to publish them twice and one by one. And sometimes when I leave a comment it doesn't post.

Chicken And Dog Way

The chickens and Morgan decided that the driveway was the place to be! At this time of day things are cooling down a bit so I imagine the shade felt good and there was a bit of a breeze flowing past. It was hotter up on the porch. Keeping chickens cool... click here.

Kristine said she wanted some quesadillas again tonight. That didn't hurt my feelings. I like them too.

Since my oven is still non-functional I use my iron ware to make the quesadillas.

First I heat up both the flat pancake skillet and the regular skillet on low while I put the quesadillas together.

Then I use the hot pancake skillet for a lid to help melt the cheese.

It doesn't take very long. I slide the quesadilla out of the skillet on to a plate and then flip the tortilla in half.
Yum! I was going to take a photo, but I started eating.

No photos yet, but I have been summer clearing/cleaning. I figure I have at least the month of August to get rid of a whole bunch of stuff. I'll take some photos when it doesn't look so scary. It would be so nice to just bring in a dumpster and fill it up with stuff I don't want.

I love to get rid of stuff I'm not using, but I'm surrounded by people who don't like change. But, I'll just keep plugging away and little by little I'll get rid of stuff. Hopefully, I'll be able to get rid of stuff in bigger batches.

zzzzz... Note: I started drinking a cup of hot chocolate before bed and I am sleeping soundly through the night. Well, I really drink the cocoa while I'm in bed reading. Works for me.

Winter Wood

The hens seem to like having the scratch on the ground,
but I notice that they only eat some of the grains. Picky chickens.
Having the wood stacked behind the door will make it nice when we need to get wood, especially at night, or when it is really cold and I don't want to walk around to the back of the shed. I guess Tom is going to try this stacking arrangement out and see how it works. He will need to keep stacking wood there as we use it up and this will mean moving the wood at least twice. More exercise.

I cleaned the chicken pen today while the hens were out. I do like a clean chicken pen and coop. I raked up lots of feathers and later took a photo of a molting light brahma. At first I thought some critter had got her and bit out a bunch of her feathers, but Kristine said no, she was just molting. She looks terrible! I was going to post the photo, but it is rather unpleasant to look at a partially feathered chicken.

Kristine and I counted the hens tonight and there are still 18. We hadn't counted them for awhile and I wanted to make sure the hens were all ok. I admit I was worried that something was after the hens even after Kristine assured me the brahma was only molting.
I finished up raking half the driveway today. Raking leaves is great exercise. It was very nice today (75 cool and crisp) and I enjoyed being out in the piney smelling woods. There are so many downed branches that it smells like Christmas trees. I don't normally notice the odor of the pine trees, but with all the broken and crushed pine branches it smells wonderful.

I didn't paint today because Kristine has a cough and I don't want any problems. Even though the paint doesn't smell there is still something that is given off as the paint dries.

Back To Raking Leaves

I'm back to raking leaves!       [3 eggs]
Almost finished the
driveway entry yesterday but had
to quit before I was done, so I will
be back out there today to
complete the job.

To tell you the truth I like the driveway
like this covered in leaves, but if I let the leaves
collect they will cover the rocks and the
driveway will turn back to mud in the winter
and a dusty, dusty road in the summer.

So, I rake and it is great exercise. Better than
going to a gym. And free!

It is supposed to rain today but it is sunny and warm, if a bit windy.
