Snowy Breakfast

Cooking when the power is out makes for a fun time as I hunt for the long matches to light the gas cook top. In the '40's I used to have the gas stove burn my eyebrows and the hair on my arms off when I would light the oven. So, I never wanted gas and always had electric stoves until I moved up here and decided I really did need a gas cook top for when the power was down. I can always use the wood stove to cook, but the gas cook top is good to have.

Green tea, organic tortilla chips, homemade salsa, and eggs cooked in bacon grease make for a good warming breakfast. I also made french toast and bacon yesterday, but didn't take photos because I was too busy cooking and eating. This photo is of my breakfast yesterday... no photos today because my internet connection is wonky and I'm trying to post while I have a connection.

There is still lots of snow outside, but it has melted some in the driveway and the chickens are out trying to find sunny spots to warm themselves.

I took the snow/hand photo yesterday morning. We would get more snow during the day, then it would rain and snow, etc., and we still have the same amount of snow today. I wanted to post different photos than these, but I'm having trouble finding thumbs in this user account of iPhoto. I need to do some more searching around to find the correct settings.

I'm going to try and post this now... hopefully the internet connection will be better tomorrow.

Yikes! It's Snowing! The Power Was Out! It's May?

Hard to believe it is the middle of May and it's snowing and the power has been off all day and part of the night. Yesterday was warmish in the sun and the chickens were having a gay old time outside having dust baths.

This morning we woke up to no power and snow... thick snow. The snow doesn't bother me, but I really do miss not having power... no computer.

The chickens got apple and broccoli, lay pellets and lots of scratch. They are not that happy, but like all the goodies to eat.

The power came back on just before 8:00pm and the phone came back online too. Computer access! Yea!

It would snow, clear a bit and then snow some more. Since the forecast was for rain I really don't know what is going to happen with the weather.

Well, I am glad I didn't spend a lot of money on plants and try and start my garden only to see it all die off from being frozen.

Stuff That Happened

Thank you for the beautiful computer!!!
I can't thank you know who you are enough for all the care and hard work!

Happy Mother's Day to me and all our dear Mothers.

Happy Mother's Day Kathleen!!!
I'll call you tomorrow.
Love You!!!

Here are some of the things that happened during the five weeks my computer was getting rebuilt:

Drapes!
I hung drapes... sheers on a rod,
drapes on a tension rod inside the window.
When I was a child I was taught that sheers were to be hung against the window and the drapes were to be hung over them and were to puddle on the floor. Well, no puddling here. I love these sheers and their embroidery is so pretty and delicate. Sooo, I hung them up this way so I can see them all the time. I'm so bad. I love breaking the rules.

Kristine made up Easter decorations
that children at the libraries could put together.
I love crafty stuff!
Those cotton ball bunnies are so cute!

Snow?

Yep! Snow in April.
It was April 14th and the rain turned to snow.
Cold!
We are not supposed to get freezes after May, but we remember snow in June a few years ago. So, I am very unsure about planting the garden until late May. Sure doesn't leave much of a growing season.

I love making ginger tea. The only down side is peeling the ginger root. My latest ploy is to use a spoon to scrape off the peel and then cut the root in large pieces, and then chuck it all in a freezer bag and freeze the lot. When I want ginger for tea I take a piece out and use a microplane and grate it into a cup and then add hot water, lemon and honey. So good. Makes me sweat though if I drink too much. Sweat? Uhhh... glow? Some people grate the ginger up all at once and freeze it ready to use.

My latest trick with the ginger is to add some to ginger ale and put it in the fridge to sit overnight. Wow... tastes so good... instead of a sugar water flavor there is a real ginger beer flavor. The best ginger ale I have tasted is from Australia... and hard to find.

Computer news: Everything works wonderfully on the computer! It is all brand new and up to date! Fast and a dream!!! Only one little glitch... the old power cord doesn't have the correct connector for the sound. Kristine is going to see about getting a new cord or adaptor tomorrow.

Well, this is enough news for today... more tomorrow.

Snowing?

I'll be posting off and on during the day.
When there is power.

It is 6 in the morning and it's snowing again.
Hard to believe...
we are supposed to get rain.

I filled up the wood stove,
took Morgan potty,
now I'm going to make some hot cocoa
and go back to bed.
~~~
Can't sleep
7:20 am
still snowing
The Weather Channel
says we have a polar jet moving through.
I believe it.
Now I'm off to feed the chickens
and walk Morgan.
~~~
Morgan is fed and walked.
The chickens ate treats and scratch.
4 eggs!
It has warmed up to 31.
Rain?

Slushy, Mushy, Snow

The hens enjoyed lettuce for a treat this morning. What they really want and all they seem to like is scratch mixed with seed.

They will break down and eat lay pellets if there is nothing else left.

I'm sure the scratch is not that good for egg production but the chickens may need it to combat the cold?

Anyway, I give them a choice of a feeder full of each feed. We will all be glad when Spring shows up to stay.

Morgan stayed in the shed today when I took the feed to the coop. She
stayed there because I told her to stay.

The weather is a milkshake of slushy mushy snow with alternating layers of wind, rain, sleet, ice and more snow.

Morgan learned this trick
from the male doberman pinscher
we had when she was a puppy.

She is very selective
and only decorates a tree
once in a while.

The chickens left 5 eggs for me this morning. Thanks for the eggs, girls.

I do feel sorry for them out in the coop, but when I go in there to collect eggs it is surprisingly warm compared to the outside. Not really warm, but not freezing either. Chickens are amazing. The cold doesn't seem to bother them nearly as much as the summer heat.

For dinner last night I made a meat loaf in a dutch oven on the wood stove. Turned out great, and I will have to take a photo tonight when I heat up the left overs. I hate it when I miss photo opportunities.

Low Snow

The snow level is down to around 1500 feet (we are at 3000) and it started snowing fast with large snowflakes so the snow has piled up rather quickly.

The top photo shows the snow after it had been snowing for only a short time.

(Update: It is 12:40 am and there's 12 inches of snow.)
(Kristine didn't make it home.)

After several hours we have a good
8 to 10 inches.

It is still snowing, but will it stop and start to rain?

Maybe, or it could keep snowing...
Questions, questions.

Morgan is drying out.

After I took her for a walk I fixed it so she could stay in the shed while I was carrying feed for the chickens.

Lot of good that did. When I came back she was laying in the snow. Silly girl.

The chickens are fine. Not exactly happy chickens, but they are ok.

Tom is still putting the new toilet together.

The power went off twice, so I'm trying to get this posted before it goes off again. I made stew for dinner. Great stuff on a cold day. Love the wood stove!

5 eggs today
Finding eggs was a surprise.

Thawing Out?

There was snow!
The power was out... no computer... bummer.

But, the wood stove kept us warm. The chickens didn't seem to care much about the cold weather. They just wanted out of the pen. Sorry chickens. No playing in the snow.

There was a goodly helping of snow. Kristine couldn't make it home and was fortunate to be able to stay with friends. Kathleen and family got off the mountain and away before the storm hit. The sun came out with forecast for sun, clouds, rain and maybe more snow. Maybe?

Getting out to the shed for chicken feed and then making it back and forth from the chicken coop is hard work for me to stay upright stomping in the snow.

But the trickiest part for me of getting around in the snow wasn't falling down or getting stuck.

It was trying to keep the vinyl trousers up!

I guess all the knee stomping action kept pulling them down.

Tricky trying to carry water, chicken feed, hold up your pants and not fall down in the snow.

Pajamas are regulation wear for cold weather. At least they are for me.

No eggs today.

And I had my 70th birthday. Happy Birthday to me!

Winter Came Back... snow!

I'm glad to have the cold days back and the snow.

The temp is up to 32 and there is some melting going on, but there is more snow due the next two weeks.

We are only at around 3000 feet and so don't get the heavy winter snows that are dumping higher up the mountains.

This time I remembered and left the gate open because after a snow I would have to shovel clear a place to move it. Don't really want to do that.

I did move the chicken's feeders inside and filled up a pot of warm water.

They are lucky hens and had some chopped up leftover steak and fresh broccoli for treats.

No eggs, but I saw an Australorp in a nest box, so maybe an egg later?

The kids are away on a side trip, but will be back for my birthday. Forecast is for a sunny day. Rains may come and melt all the snow by then. Sure doesn't take long for the snow to melt. I would just as soon have a snowy birthday except I don't want the kids to have to drive through bad weather.

Rain and Thai

Nothing much new to post about except that it rained all day with a little snow in the late afternoon and Tom and Kristine went to town for lunch and a movie.

I had a lazy day watching shows, keeping the wood stove filled and the house warm and cozy. It was hard staying awake because I really just wanted to crawl back in bed and sleep.

Kristine brought me back some Thai food to try and a menu to check over so I will have a good idea of what I will want to order when she takes me out for lunch. When she finishes her classes we plan to go to the quilt store and then out for lunch.

Morgan stayed in the loft all day sleeping (like I wanted to) and didn't come downstairs until Kristine got home. The chickens stayed in the coop out of the rain and I didn't mess with the broody hen so I imagine she was a happy camper in one of the nest boxes.

I thought this video was interesting. It shows some people building a cob chicken coop. The first part until about 1:55 is two people talking then it shows the cob coop in progress. I think this could be fun if there was a lot of people involved. I would end up with a coop plus I would get to play in the mud.

This video of a coop being built is neat, but I don't really like the music. This coop would work in a backyard but not up here in the woods. Fun to watch. I turned the sound off.

Snowy Slow Day

4/28/10 - It hailed today so hard it looks like it snowed and now it is hailing again... thunder and lightning. Weather is weird. Chickens are ok. Kristine went back to the doctor and got antibiotics this time. I'm getting better... just want to sleep all the time.

Hope I will feel like reading blogs and writing a post soon. Hope everyone is healthy and enjoying Spring weather. Spring must be happening somewhere.

Thank you for all the good wishes!

4/19/10 - A nurse said it is the three week cold from the hot place and that 3 out of 5 people have it. Bad news. My throat has pretty much stopped hurting which is one improvement. I really don't want to itemize the rest. Kristine sounds like she has pneumonia. Snow is gone. Rain tomorrow. The Buff is back out with the other chickens. Thank you for checking in and leaving such great comments!

Quick update: 4/13/10
Still sick, weather bad, snow, rain, thunder/lightening, power outages. Will post again when I feel better. I know I'm sick because I don't want to read blogs or post. Kristine went to class today and missed part of it because she was coughing so much she had to leave. The Buff is healing. Thank you for all the kind words!

Three or four inches of snow.
The snow is already melting because of the rain.
I will add to this post when I'm feeling better.

Snowy Moss And Muddy Chicken Feet

The moss doesn't seem to be bothered by the snow. I took the photo in the afternoon and lots of the snow had melted away because of the rain. More rain is forecast, but tomorrow we are supposed to have a break in the weather.

It has snowed here in May and Tom says it has snowed in June. This snow history gives me a bit of slack when it comes to getting my garden ready and planted. Our weather is a bit unpredictable.

Since we are going to hopefully have a sunny rain free day tomorrow I plan to haul a bunch of leaves and dump them in the chicken pen. I feel so sorry for the muddy footed chickens.

They really want out and hate being locked up. They even stand out in the rain at the end of the pen staring at the door waiting for me to come out and free them. I feel so guilty.

But they are safe if muddy. Because of the holiday and people and dogs not following their regular routines we are going to keep the chickens locked up until thing settle back to normal.

With some luck the fox will have found himself a new place to look for his dinner. Although it may have been a vixen looking for food for her kits.

(March 31, 2009)
Mossy rocks.

Our coop is this close to the house. The bears don't really care. They get mixed signals. Some people scare them away, shoot at them, take photos, and some even feed them. A fed bear is a dead bear because they won't go away and become bold and scare people or worse.

A big Daddy bear could rip that door off. A bear tore apart a goat shed up here to get at the goats. We have been lucky that the bears that have investigated our coop have been bears this size or smaller.

Chickens Warming By Shed

The chickens are no dummies!

They know where the warmest spots are on the property.

They like the spot next to the green house best, but there is snow there.

I was up early with Kristine and got a photo of the snow in the planter boxes. I added some leaves and more snow later.

I read that Google is shutting down the Page Creator and this may cause some problems? Info here. One of my Pages above (Garden) has gone missing. I haven't seen a message on my Dashboard, so I don't know if this is going to affect my blog. Wait and see?

I have been searching around trying to find out more information about the change that affects the templates and links. It seems that this changeover has been going on for quite a while, but Page Creator is finally being shut down. I started this blog at the end of 2008, so I hope I am OK.

I did finally find this page that has more information than I want to know. But I guess I should check it out and see if I have any potential problems? I have the bury my head in the sand reaction to all this. Maybe I'll just wait and see what happens and hope for the best.

I know I'm chicken!

Snow Last Night

Surprise! It really did snow last night. By this afternoon a lot of the snow had melted and we let the chickens and Morgan out to stretch their legs.

Kristine said she didn't have much trouble driving in the snow this morning once she got out to the main road.

I really like how the snow makes the forest look so pretty. I don't even miss the green leaves on the trees.

I guess I am a winter person.

.
Only problem is I can't get many of my projects under way until it warms up around here

Morgan would like to join the hens in the scratch treat, but she knows I don't want her licking up the chickens food.

So she watches. I know. Sorry, Morgan.
It just isn't fair that the chickens get to eat
and she has to watch.

Kristine wanted biscuits, so I made biscuits on the wood stove. They turned out pretty good. I'm getting much better at cooking on the wood stove.

(March 10, 2010)
It's amazing. Everything still looks the same.

Snow Surprise!

Morgan got to run around today for an hour or two, but the chickens had to stay locked up.

We are supposed to get a break in the weather tomorrow and have some sun. But, we were supposed to have rain today not snow. So?

I hope the sun forecast really happens. There isn't that much snow, so it should all melt off if we get a sunny day.

If we start having harder winters with more snow and rain, I am going to need to make some changes to the coop and pen.

I could cover the pen top and sides with plastic tarp so the hens would have a dry spot outside. I haven't had to do that because the longest the hens have had to stay inside has been around five days and that only happens a few times a year.

I have some old fence wood that I could use to build a new chicken coop this summer. I fantasize about what kind of chicken coop I would like to build and keep photos of coops I like.

Kristine picked up a "My Book" backup drive for my Mac and I have spent hours trying to get it to install. Arrrgh! I gave up for today. I'll tackle the problem tomorrow.

She got me the My Book Essential 500 and I should be able to just hook it up and run the software, but, no, it has issues with formatting and not running the software. I am going to call the customer service number tomorrow if I can't figure out an answer.

(March 3, 2009)
I don't know what happened to Marion.

Chicken Treats In The Snow

I wouldn't want to walk around barefoot in the snow, but these little girls don't seem to mind. I tossed a bag of lettuce out in the pen for the chickens while I changed their water and gave them more feed.

There is really not that much snow in the pen. A lot of the snow gets hung up in the trees or on the leaves that are caught in the anchor fencing over the top of the pen. Raccoons and bears can walk around up there but so far they haven't gotten past the wire. The leaves make a snow and sun screen.  I'll take them down when we get some sun and snow is history.  I shoot the leaves off with the hose.                                                                                                                            It snowed again last night, but as the photo shows there really isn't that much snow. There has been so much rain in between the snow storms that melted away the fallen snow that this is all that is left. Just enough snow to mess things up and make it so we couldn't get out because the main road is not plowed.

We should be able to get out tomorrow because we are supposed to have rain not more snow. But, who knows?

Morgan has decided she loves being out in the snow and sometimes won't come when we call her. I guess she is having too much fun running and playing looking for snow critters.

Kristine made me watch an anime called Gintama (Silver Balls) episodes 151 and 152. Pretty funny! This is not really my kind of humor, but I can see why she laughs so much when she watches. I wonder if they have chicken anime?

I had a great idea! Well, I thought it was. Kristine is not so sure...
I think it is such a waste to never look at past posts. Besides I like to see what I was up to last year.  Soooo, my plan is to put a link to the same day last year on each post... somewhere.  How about... Peek at the past? Gee. I was still drinking tea last year. Had to give that up.

Snow Day

click to enlarge photo I'm going to post this as fast as I can. Three times today the power has gone off in the middle of posting. Snow is still falling, but sun tomorrow? Roads not plowed. Kristine stuck at home.

I gave the chickens warm water this morning. I'll give them some more water, more feed and treats.

PS: I warmed up some more water and warmed up some carrot peeling on the wood stove for treats.  Gave the hens some more grain and lay for the second time today. I'll check for eggs later. Chickens are doing OK.

PSS: I went out just before dark and collected two eggs! Very, very cold eggs. And I took a photo of the chickens on the roosts and in the nest boxes. This was the best of the lot.

PSSS: Still snowing. This morning the forecast was for sun tomorrow. Now it says more snow. Hard to know what's going to happen.

Snow and Rain

The chickens are staying inside the coop. An Australorp  ran out in the pen clucking away when she heard me walking in the snow bringing warm water, but then she turned around and ran right back inside. I can see a hen looking at me through the glass. Boo!   The weather is  pretty bad farther up the mountain where there is more snow, snowy fog and windy storm are making driving very dangerous. I'm staying away from the tv news about all the falling trees. We are getting lots of storm, rain and a some snow so far.
Today I was going to take some photos of all the mushrooms that have sprung up, but the snow covered them up and I didn't look for them. Hard to know what is going to happen with the snow forecasts. We are due another big storm so we will probably get hit with snow. I hope Kristine and the other drivers will be safe on the roads and I hope the trees stay upright.
The snow was being melted by a new rain storm when I went out with the warm water. I stopped and took a photo of my neat little drainage ditch that is diverting runoff water from the chicken coop and pen. It works!
I miss reading blogs and posting. I know I wanted rain, but I didn't know we were due an El Nino.

What Is That?

What is that stuff? Kristine called out that the chickens were on the porch trying to eat the snow. When I opened the slider I could hear the tiny snow hitting the porch with a tick, tick, sound. I guess the hens thought I was throwing treats out for them to eat. It is cold out. The chickens went to bed early way before they usually go in the coop; they are no dummies.

I went in the coop and made sure the hens had lots of pellets and I filled up their grain bin. One of these days the chickens are going to surprise me with lots of eggs, but I don't think it is going to happen until it warms up and the days get longer. A few eggs are better than no eggs. The pretty brown eggs Tom bought at the store look fine, taste different and I notice a faint barnyard smell to them after I cook them. Strange. I want my chickens eggs. Sigh.

Morgan wants in too. It would really snow if we had some rain. If some moisture moves in tonight, I may wake up to a lovely white world. I thought it was tiny hail, but I was voted down by the snow experts in the family.

I wanted to find out and looked up snow in wiki here and now know more than I wanted about snow. I guess the snow on the deck is snow pellets. Or not? Maybe it is soft hail? Snow flakes are so beautiful.

I remember the first time I cut out a paper snow flake. It must have been a second or third grade art craft and I was so surprised when I unfolded the paper to find a lovely snow flake. I feel the urge to fold and cut some paper and create a Christmas snow flake for the window. Or ceiling? I found a tutorial here. I forgot how to fold the paper. I like the simple Christmas homemade items. Paper chains anyone. Oh, I loved the smell of that school paste.

I usually read The Telegraph as part of my online news regime, and this morning I ran across this article here that I feel vindicates my mutterings to myself sometimes when thinking through problems or making plans. I usually catch flack for thinking out loud from people who think they are funny. Ha! I hate it when people make fun of others because of habit or for the sake of what they think is humor. I guess I'm just a fragile flower.

Winter Blue

Kristine took this photo on Tuesday with my camera trying to capture the beautiful deep blue sky. I have seen the sky like this a few times and the blue is hard to describe and even more striking than in this photo. Almost all the snow is gone tonight in the heavy rains we have been having, but we may have snow tonight if it gets cold enough.

There was a break in the rain this morning which allowed me a chance to let the chickens out in their pen. The hens walked calmly out and stood on the wet straw, looked around, fluffed up their feathers and then strolled back inside when it started raining again. I left the bottom of the windows uncovered so they can go outside when they want. I thought they would be more excited to get out.

I found a rainfall map here and thanks to the rain we are having I'm sure we will be over the 50% mark this year. I lived in the Santa Cruz Mountain through the wettest and second driest years on record.

During the heavy rains of 82/83 the mountains turned into peanut butter and slid all over the place blocking roads and doing all kinds of damage. The hill above us broke away and slid down and crashed into the side of our house, knocked in the wall and came more than halfway through the house. Amazingly the second story wall held, the rest of the house acted as a retaining wall and held back the hill. That was scary. That was the year Love Creek went and buried homes and people. Lots of people lost their homes and lives. One of my neighbors was killed when his tractor tipped over when he was trying to clear the road.

Correction: Kristine just told me I got my mudslides mixed up. 78/79 is when the mudslides hit the side of the house, knocked in about 24 feet and went inside. 82/83 is when, after the retaining wall was built and the house repaired, another mudslide came around the back of the house and filled up the backyard three and a half feet, right up against the back of the house, but didn't come inside. There were other mudslides, but these were the biggest.

1976/77 I remember as hot, dry and uncomfortable. Our home was on well water and the well ran dry and we had to haul water from Los Gatos or Scotts Valley to fill the tank. We became major water conservationists. If I could think of a way not to use water I didn't use it. The girls were told not to flush the toilet unless really necessary and to pee outside was advised. Peeing off decks into the forest was also enjoyed by the fellows in the area, but a bit hard for the girls. We used paper plates and picnic stuff we could throw away so we didn't have to use water to wash dishes. Simple cooking: baked potatoes, lined pans with aluminum foil to cook roast, etc., salads. We went to weekly baths and clothes washing. No watering which meant plants died. I remember our neighbors leaving to drive down to Santa Cruz to sleep on the beach because it was too hot to sleep at night. I remember being very afraid there would be a forest fire. It was so dry the forest would have exploded.

Then there was the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that cracked the house down the middle, the other mudslides, the forest fires, the road cave ins, etc. Yep! I guess it was just one disaster after another living in those beautiful redwood mountains, but it was worth it being surrounded by all that beauty.

Tom and Kristine are watching Rio Bravo. Love that movie. I think I will watch The Ladykillers with Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, and Katie Johnson. I like movies that have great dialog.

I made chicken soup with rice for dinner tonight. We had garlic bread, so that made an easy dinner. It is not even 5:30 and it is already dark. I'm going to go check on the chickens again after I post this. Maybe there will be an egg? I'll have to wait for a break in the rain because it is coming down in buckets.

Snowy Woods

I love the snowy woods, but it is raining and I expect to wake up tomorrow to find all the snow gone from the trees, the leaves on the ground uncovered and just a few patches of snow left under some trees in the shade. At least that is what usually happens.

It is supposed to rain until Monday, so I'll have to wait at least until then to start raking. The weather is tricky. Sometimes I'm expecting lots of rain and the storm misses us. I'm looking forward to being outside working in the cold sunshine. I love winter.

I got a face and head freeze the other night, so last night I slept on the couch in front of the wood stove. How neat is that! I think I would like to move out there permanently or get a wood stove next to my bed.

Tonight I made baked apples in the dutch oven on the wood stove. I put a metal steamer under the corning ware pan with the apples in it (with a cup of water) and put the whole thing in the dutch oven and left the lid on until I smelled apples. I served the baked apples with some of the cranberries I cooked. The steamer held the corning ware up off the bottom of the dutch oven. I wonder if I could bake cornbread that way? I'll have to try.

Kristine brought home a Basil Rathbone DVD of The Woman In Green. I think I saw it many years ago and enjoyed watching it again. She also brought me a book, The World Of Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse. I remember reading those stories a long time ago (copyright 1967) and I'm looking forward to reading them again.

If we get a break in the rain, I would like to let the chickens out for a bit. I feel bad keeping them cooped up, but between the snow, cold, and the fox I don't feel like I have much choice.

Kathleen called to tell me they are all feeling better and hope to visit in February. This will work! I get to keep all the Christmas decorations up until they get here to enjoy them. Well, at least that's my excuse!

Thank you little hen.
