Hate Speech Is Murder! Gabrielle Giffords Shot!

The young girl wearing a "Peace" headband and carrying a sign that said "Hate Speech Is Murder" who came to Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords offices to show support had it right on the money.

The numbers keep changing, but the latest I have read is that 6 people were killed and 19 injured.

I found this YouTube video where Giffords speaks about the consequences of hate speech and the gun sight targeted list that zeros in on her district.

I had to turn my sound way up to hear.

I hope this tragedy will bring about a true change in the way beliefs are espoused.

WHAT is happening to our country???

Hey, I LOVE your chickens! Where are you in the Sierras? East or West? I'm asking because we frequently drive up to Yosemite...stay in Merced, but have breakfast in Mariposa. OR, we stay in Mammoth and drive over the Tioga Pass. We LOVE the Sierras!

This is horrific and if people don’t become more aware of how the things they say can lead to tragedy it won’t change. Bullying, hate speech is happening from children to our government--it’s so sad.

Me too. Peace to all. It's incredibly sad.

Agree with the sentiment in this post and to the comments. One is not allowed to shout fire in theatres, no matter what they may think of the protection of free speech. Only last week the media was used to advocate the execution of Michael Vick for killing dogs. Last April Republican Congressman Paul Broun used the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing: "Fellow patriots, we have a lot of domestic enemies of the constitution, and they're right down the Mall, in the Congress of the United States – and right down Independence Avenue in the White House that belongs to us. It's not about my ability to hunt, which I love to do. It's not about the ability for me to protect my family and property against criminals, which we have the right to do. But it's all about us protecting ourselves from a tyrannical government." The year before, this same Broun singled out then-Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, as one such "domestic enemy of the constitution". He was re-elected last November with 67% of the vote. As a teacher of 20th century history here about 7 miles from Dachau in Germany, I know all about how self-serving demagogues like Palin will sacrifice people's lives for their own ends and use God and patriotism to justify it.

Amen to that sentiment! I hope some of these folks with their hate-mongering ways take this horrible tragedy to heart.

We have stronger hate speech laws in Canada (than in the US.) I don't mind one bit having my "freedoms" limited in this way!

I, too, am sickened by this total nonsense that an innocent decent person can be cut down in their prime by a deranged nut. Fortunately, he wasn't able to go that far. And now he's got a high profile lawyer. I feel as bad about this as I did when Kennedy was shot in '63. Deplorable.

perhaps this disaster will allow america to review it's hand gun laws
AND perhaps the way it helps with mental illness problems too!

This was a tragic event. IT is a shame when people that care about the state of affairs or support those who care are subject to this sort of terrorism. I put something on my blog for you

As you can imagine, here in AZ, this has been devastating. We've already been the victim of so much political cr*P and now this. Gabby is a wonderful person and a great congresswoman.
