Pumpkin UFO?

A UFO landed in my planter bed!

Pretty neat! I planted some pumpkin seeds and used this old piece of a light fixture as a cloche to protect the new growth from the rain and critters who would eat the plants.

I love finding new uses for old stuff!

I do keep trying to come up with a really good idea for how to build a cover to protect the plants in the beds. I tried growing potatoes and something ate them all.

That is a weed growing out there all by itself. Nobody wants to eat the weed.

I have decided I need to use chicken wire and not netting because the deer will just push the netting aside. I've been taking some time off and enjoying myself reading and just goofing off. As the weather gets better I am going to have to get back to actually doing things. But not yet. I'm having fun being lazy. I recommend it!

The chickens are molting
and they look terrible.
Poor hens!

Mom and Dad used to use cans with the top and bottom cut out.

Hang some tin pie plates in the garden and the noise spooks some of the varmits. Marcy has also had some success with just a white bag in a tree, blowing in the wind, this keeps some deer away from the fruit.

It just doesn't seem right that pest don't want to eat the weeds but would rather dine on the things we want to grow!

What a great idea! If it works, why not! Have you tried old windows and setting them up 'teepee' style? You could put chicken wire or screening over the ends to keep out the critters. It almost like what we call here in Nova Scotia, a 'cold frame' to protect the plants from the weather. Just a thought. Enjoy your time off.

I've always heard that if you put human hair around your garden that they wouldn't come near the garden.

Never have tried, never really had problems with deer. We struggle with groundhogs, racoons.

Enjoy reading your blog.

Isn't that crazy that nothing seems to like the weeds?
I bet they'd eat them if we planted them...
My brother had some sort of sweet potato vines and they were decimated by a woodchuck.
I like your idea of using the light fixture. Pretty neat!

I'm sure your pumpkins will be good. I have been buying some pumpkins to feed my chickens.

Have you heard of Deer Off --it's a non-toxic spray. I use their Critter Off in my car engine to discourage mice from eating the wires. It works great. We have few deer here so I don't know how that product works, but both are from the same place.

Seems to work great for that, I love when things can be recycled for a new use.

I just set out some basil and didn't get it planted soon enough. It's rooted through the bottom of the container and going strong.
