Valentine Chicken

This is a pink Valentine Chicken. Just thought I would say in case there is any question. The origami paper had a yellow spot in the center which just happened to turn out to be the part that was cut off and ended up as the egg. Sweet!

Valentine's Day brings back lots of fun and not so fun memories of giving and not always getting Valentine's Day cards at school. In the 1940's we would each decorate a shoe box or paper bag in class with a Valentines theme and take it home, fill it with valentine cards, bring it back to school and then hand out and collect cards. There was this counting thing that happened: "How many cards did you get?" "Did you get one from, Salley?" Oh, boy! I got one from, Billy." Yuk! I remember using white school paste (I love the smell of that stuff) and making cards out of paper doilies, glitter, construction paper, candy, fuzzy pipe cleaners, ribbon, lace, crayons, paint, and other stuff that I can't recall. Mostly I remember buying bunches of Valentine cards at the store and spending lots of time writing down names and little messages.

Lately I have happened upon a few bloggers who are busy churning out Valentine Day gifts to share with friends and family. All that industry has made me feel bleh and that I ought to do something too... but what? I was looking around on the web for some chicken foil pants (that's another post) and spotted this cute little chicken. Ah! Ha! I can do that and it kinda looks like a Valentine chicken. Kinda...  I had a very hard time figuring out the folds for this little hen. Kristine even tried to help me, but she wasn't feeling very well. I shouldn't have asked her to help anyway, because I was going to use the chicken on a card for her. So, I kept at the folding and watching the origami chicken video and finally figured it out!

It seems that I don't so much celebrate holidays for their sake anymore as just view the days as an excuse to have some time off. I guess it's just old age. Well, at least I have a few days left to pull together some cards.

Note to myself: I need to make another deal with myself about this blog and go back to posting everyday because I don't really like this hit or miss kind of blogging. Besides my egg count is getting off.

Cute origami chicken! I can do the basics but am always surprised at how the little kids at the kindergarten can make such an assortment of things without even being able to read the book! Must be inbred.

I have been really lax on the blogging issue also, I really think it is the time of year. Not much going on except the same old thing everyday. I loved the origami!

Hi Callie ~ Love your origami chicken ! My Grandson came over yesterday evening while his Mom went to a meeting. He brought his valentines to work on , they were store bought valentines , but they were cute and had little stickers to decorate them with.
I plan to make pop-up valentine cards today for the Grands and my kids.

I enjoyed reading your " Peek at the Past " , speaking of driving in snow , we're suppose to get more snow tonight.

We don't really do the holiday things either, except Thanksgiving and Christmas, mostly because it has all become so commercialized. People think you have to spend money to enjoy a holiday...gifts, cards, candy, jewelry, meals out, etc. Can't it be about being with the ones you care about? Have a happy V-Day!

Origami chicken.. hmm, sounds like a new dish! haha
We did the same thing in grade school and it was pretty much the same scenario as you had. I wonder if they still do that in schools? Some places may not even allow it. Who knows - they should let kids be kids.
Lisa is right - same thing pretty much going on, at least for me lately. Just snow, snow, snow!

Wow you re creative.. I have never done the origami stuff.. Cute chicken.. I do remember the decorated with hearts & flowers & lace & bows, shoebox valentine mailbox, thats we called them in school, and everyone traded Vcards. What fun.. WE also had room mothers who provided cookies & milk for snack before we took our Valentines home. and In some of my classes the teacher must have been less creative cuz, I remember us decorating brown paper bags & taping them to the back of our desks. Ahhhh Childhood memories..

Ooh, I like the origami chicken and egg. Now we know: the chicken came first and the egg was just the bonus! :)
