There was thunder, loud booming mountain thunder but not that much rain. Gee and I was all prepared for a deluge. Makes me feel kinda cheated after I did all that work getting ready for a downpour.



Birds on the line...

I like how clothespins look sitting on the line like little birds waiting for some laundry to clasp in their claws.

Part of getting ready was to bring in or cover the things I couldn't move. Things like the clothespin bag and the lounge cushion can stay dry outside hanging on the side of the house under the eave overhang.

I covered other things like the porch swing with plastic tarp and may just leave it on for Winter this year. The snow is not doing the plastic any good and the plastic is getting dark.

There were several wind chimes I brought inside that are really not made to withstand weather. I hung the biggest one on the hall tree because I didn't know what else to do with it. It can stay there for now with all the dog leashes, the veggie shopping bag and the egg basket.

I really did a job on myself moving all that heavy stuff yesterday and spent a lot of time today trying to convince my aching muscles to forgive and forget. I'm feeling better now and hope that tomorrow I'll feel like I can go back to sorting the rest of the boxes.

The chickens got out of their pen towards the end of the day.

Morgan is tired too.

She is sleeping here near me as I write this post.

The Other Hen/Roo

This morning Kristine pointed out the other hen that is sex changing. It is the buff Orpington. I'm not sure if the black hen (Australorp) is the other Hen/Roo. I don't think so because the comb is not very big. You can see the Orpington has an enlarged comb and Kristine called my attention to the fact that she doesn't have a fluffy hen bum and she has gotten thiner. You can see she kind of has feathered pantaloons instead of the fluffy hen bum. I tried to get a photo of one but I found it very difficult because I got no cooperation from the girls. At all. I'll keep trying. I would like to get a photo of this one and another Orpington to compare their characteristics. 

This is the second photo of the hall tree I have posted. The reason it is here again is because I have been thinking about the things we do all the time that we never think about because they are so much a part of our life. I call them the invisible things because they don't get recorded because they are taken for granted. So, here goes with this answer to, "Gee, I wonder how they used to collect eggs?" question. Sounds dumb, but somewhere down the road someone may wonder? I wonder how my great grandparents did stuff. Well, this is what I do. I come out of the house, sit down, pull on my boots, get my coat and egg basket and head to the coop, put the eggs in the basket, come back here and do it all in reverse. Maybe this sounds dumb, but I'm going to try and record the invisible stuff when I can recognize it.

These two photos are of the top nest box (with me holding the door open) showing the opening for the hens to get inside (top) and the scrap boards (bottom) on the other end of the nest. When I say I closed in these boxes I don't mean that they are very dark. It is just that now they are closed in on three sides and little bit on the fourth. The hens seem to like them a lot.

Nothing Is Ever Easy

Curtains!

I actually finally got them hung up!

So you want to hang up a pole? Doesn't sound like a problem.

Why is there always a problem?

Well, it seemed easy. Just put up some hangers for the pole so I could hang curtains up to hide all the stuff in the closet and keep the light off my fabric. It started out easy. I drilled the holes for the first hanger and found longer screws and put it up. The hanger on the left side was a bear to hang. The drill wouldn't drill. Maybe hit a nail? Then one of the screws broke off. Then I had to pound nails in where the drill wouldn't work. Then I had to find a hammer and a piece of board to use to yank out the nail. There were lots of other problems that I won't bore you with. But, I finally got the pole up and the curtain hung. Window curtain photos tomorrow. I hope. (added: Nope. I decided, no curtain on the window!)

I'm still working on the curtains. See the green curtain on the table.

I'm trying to figure out whether I should cut off all the foo foo ruffles and make a curtain for the window, or use some other throws that I 

have and cut them up and make some curtains?

Ah, I got a photo of the mouse pad I cut up to made a holder for my foot control for my sewing machine. I hate trying to find the control when it keeps sliding around on the floor. I read about someone doing this so when we found a mouse pad during Spring cleaning I thought I would try it out. Haven't been sewing so I don't know how it works. 

The new rule around here is everyone is supposed to use this door to go in and out of the house... not the slider. There is a screen door you have to go through to get into this entry. The idea is to make it harder for the mosquitos, wasps, etc. to get into the house. I put a pillow on the hall tree for us to use as this is also supposed to be where we change from outside shoes/boots to inside footwear.

I collected 11 eggs today!
