Cook Top Biscuits To Sooth My Soul

I made biscuits with half whole wheat and half white flour. I like the flavor the whole wheat adds, but I must admit that the white four biscuits have a finer texture. I do like fluffy biscuits.

Cooking biscuits on the cook top instead of in the oven has turned out to be a fun, fast and easy way to make biscuits.

It has been a very blah day. So (instead of eating up all the biscuits) to cheer myself up I spent most of the day watching 36 YouTube videos:
Victorian Farm

I was very glad to spend my day with the Victorian farmers. Much nicer than paying attention to my gloomy self.

Riddle for today:
I'm assumed to be a gift that's priceless, that can't be bought or sold. My value is far greater than a mountain made of gold.
What am I?

The answer to yesterday's riddle is: Your tongue.

Dutch Oven On The Cook Top Biscuits

Kristine and I wanted biscuits, no oven, so I made them on the cooktop.

I set the burner on low, put a rack in the pan, set a little pot of water on the rack, and put the lid on the dutch oven and let it heat up.

While the dutch oven was heating I made some biscuits from scratch, not chicken feed, I used my Betty Crocker cookbook.

I took out the pot of water and rack, oiled the bottom of the dutch oven with vegetable oil, and placed the biscuits in the dutch oven. I put on the lid and set the timer for ten minutes.

After ten minutes, I turned the biscuits over... here are three turned. Then I put the lid back on and set the timer for another ten minutes.

I'm not too sure what the water did, but I didn't want to let the dutch oven heat without something in it and I didn't want to put in oil and have it cook away. This worked out great.

Surprise! Biscuits!

I was surprised they turned out so well. Always before I have used the wood stove to do this.

I painted some in Kristine's room, but took most of the day off.

Happy weekend!

Biscuits On The Wood Stove

Take my picture! Hen Roo posed for a photo and now this Buff Brahma is posing for a picture too. In the rain. I didn't let the hens out today but they went outside anyway and stood in the rain in their pen and yelled at me!

I know it must have been something very unpleasant in chicken, so I'm very glad I don't understand their language. Body language is something else. Their body language said loud and clear that they were upset and wanted out of the pen right now or they were going to hide their eggs or ?
The raincoat has been retired. Morgan spent part of the day outside playing when the rain was fairly light. She wouldn't come back! I tricked her with the slider. She heard it open and came because she thought I was going to give the chickens treats. She always comes for that.

I made homemade drop biscuits on the wood stove last night and tonight. My method was first to pre-heat the iron pan and the lid on the wood stove on a trivit. While the pan and lid were heating I mixed up the drop biscuits. I ran out of butter tonight so I substituted partially with bacon grease. I think bacon grease is the secret ingredient in a lot of recipes.

Then, quick, I got the pan off the wood stove (I left the lid heating on the trivit on the stove) I oiled the pan generously, dropped the biscuits in, popped on the lid and put the pan on the trivit for 10 minutes. Then I checked to see how the biscuits were cooking. I decided it was time to turn them.
I brought the pan over to the cook top. Then I took the lid off and oiled it. Then I put the lid back on the pot and turned the whole thing up side down lid and all. Then I lifted off the pan. The biscuits were in the lid with the cooked side up!
Then I oiled the pan again and slipped the biscuits off the lid back into the pan. This time the uncooked side is against the bottom all set to brown. I love it when a plan comes together! They tasted so good! I really like knowing that I can cook on the wood stove if there is need. For now it is just a lot of fun!

Neat replica hoosier!
I want these!
Well, maybe not. The food bins are not safe for food storage. But the containers are neat. And the spice rack, and...

Iron Biscuits

Curly, the Cochin, then a Light Brahma,
a Buff Brahma, an Orpington and a Light Brahma on the old horse feeder,
(oops, Kristine just told me that it really is a planter box,
but the horse did nibble on it)
the black Australorp and another Buff Brahma
When I go out to the coop in the late afternoon, the hens that are already in the coop for the night hear me coming and some of them hurry outside and come towards me hoping for treats. Today when they noticed I wasn't carrying anything, they stopped and then I stopped and took a photo. The Australorp was getting ready to turn and head back to the coop. I put the blue lid out so the rain could wash it off. Lazy me.

Kitchen update: This is how far the cabinets have come because I can't do any painting until Kristine is doing better with her cough or until I can leave the windows open for a couple of days. I did get the drawer fronts attached to cover the openings where the drawers used to be. I painted the cabinet doors and the drawer fronts before I brought them in the house. I'll go ahead and cut and attach the kick boards and trim.
This was a learning experience. I thought I would try out making biscuits on the wood stove. First, I heated the empty iron fry pan and lid up on the wood stove before I put the biscuits in and then I let them cook for about ten minutes. Kristine carried the pan back to the stove so we could flip the biscuits over. I put the paper plate over the biscuits and then Tom turned the whole thing over and the biscuits came out on the plate. Then I slipped the biscuits back in the pan with the cooked side up so the other side of the biscuits could cook. The biscuits would have slid off easier if I had floured the paper plate first. Note to self.
The leftover stew is heating up on top with the big pot of water that helps keep the air from getting too dry. I think the trick to getting the biscuits to cook on top of the wood stove is to get the pan and lid really hot before I put in the biscuits. It will also work out better next time I make them if I don't goof up and put an extra cup of flour in the bowl. I used butter instead of shortening and I did not grease the pan. The wok holder thing the pan is sitting in keeps the bottom of the pan from touching the stove. I'm going to keep making biscuits or corn bread on the wood stove until I figure it out. Next I'd like to try baked apples on the wood stove.
